Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, is charged with attempting to set off a bomb to blow up a plane-which apparently failed miserably, and resulted in a fire in which he received third degree burns. The young Nigerian who claims to have ties to Al Qaeda was taken away handcuffed to a gurnee on his way to receive medical treatment.
Abdulmutallab’s put the bomb materials in his underwear to avoid detection. The reagent that he used to set off the PETN reportedly was brought onboard in a syringe, which not only would be useful for introducing the reagent to the explosive but facilitated smuggling it, for example under the guise of it being insulin. Abdulmutallab is accused of trying to detonate an explosive device hidden on his body as the plane approached Detroit on a flight from Amsterdam last Friday.
Abdulmutallab stood up to ignite his underwear. One can only suspect that if Abdulmutallab had worn a baseball cap and sang Dixie, these, too, would now be banned. Time of reckoning has come. Abdulmutallab has just exacerbated their fight.
Abdulmutallab also had a syringe filled with liquid. Abdulmutallab was overpowered by other passengers after they heard a pop and saw flames as the plane made its approach to land. Two passengers were injured and the suspect suffered serious burns. Abdulmutallab was carrying a valid Nigerian passport and had a valid U.S. They claim after a layover of less than three hours, he passed through a security check at the gate in Amsterdam, including a hand baggage scan and a metal detector, officials said.
Passengers and crew quickly subdued him and extinguished the fire started when the attack failed. Passengers reported smelling smoke and saw that something in his lap was on fire. Fellow passenger Jasper Schuringa, a Dutch film director, jumped on Abdulmutallab, and he and other passengers subdued him as flight attendants used fire extinguishers to douse the flames. At this point, Abdulmutallab was taken toward the front of the airplane cabin, and was seen to have lost his pants due to the fire, and had burns on his legs. After being taken into custody, Abdulmutallab told authorities he had been directed by al-Qaeda.
Abdulmutallab had been listed in Homeland Security’s potential terrorists. Abdulmutallab stood up and said he must pray in the mosque, and left, Hassan recalled. Abdulmutallab told investigators that he trained for a month with the terrorist group in Yemen, where he was given the underwear with 80 grams of explosives sewed in.
