Are Surveillance Cameras Effective In Chicago?
Chicago has been installing more surveillance cameras in high crime and threatened areas around the city as part of what is called “Operation Disruptive”.
And following in Chicago’s lead many other major cities are starting or planning similar surveillance camera programs. The cities include New York, Washington, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
Mayor Richard Daley has called the installation of surveillance cameras as “the next best thing to having a police officer stationed at every crime hot spot”. In October, Daley announced that he will spend $1 million dollars to install 100 cameras in 2007 which will add to the existing hundreds already installed.
Those who have studied crime and surveillance cameras claim they act as a deterrent to crime and terrorism, claiming that criminals are likely to think twice about committing a crime if they know they will be caught on a digital video surveillance camera.
City officials claim that surveillance video cameras have helped reduce crime at corners where they are installed.
