That sober assessment weighed on the minds of NIU students who piled suitcases and laundry bags into cars Friday and left the nearly empty, snow-covered campus, apprehensive about their eventual return.

Cameras themselves are probably no more invasive than any one of a host of other forms of surveillance that have become routine in public schools, which these days resemble prisons, both in appearance and intent, more than they do the groves of academe.

School officials throughout the nation are held accountable by parents to ensure student safety on the buses, and by using video surveillance this security can be assured.

Cameras provide more information but don’t necessarily stop crime, say critics, who point out that high-profile school shootings have happened under the gaze of security cameras. The cameras deter crime and may lead some students to confess to infractions that weren’t even caught on the security cameras.
