Employee theft is one of the most pervasive problems faced by businesses today, and it continues to escalate at an estimated rate of 15 percent per year. In the hospital, employees who took property were most unhappy about their employer’s lack of caring, in addition to poor treatment by immediate supervisors and limited job responsibility. Retail store employees have a constant opportunity to steal cash or merchandise and all they need is the desire and sufficient motivation to do so. What keeps most employees honest is moral character, loyalty, respect for the law and their employer, and the desire to be viewed as trustworthy.

Business owners must be aware of these facts in order to detect employee theft. It is a common fact that most employers do not suspect their employees of theft. Business owners like to think that their employees are honest and care about the business almost as much as the owners do. Theft and dishonesty is only a problem for big business. Business owners who make frequent bank deposits substantially reduce their risk. If you handle a lot of cash, make deposits twice a day.

Employees can steal easily in many ways, with some examples being: not giving the customer a receipt and the correct change, giving back fictitious refunds, and pretending to ring up merchandise for friends. Prevention is key, but if you own a business and suspect that an employee is stealing from you, call the police. Employees steal for many reasons, and most explain it by rationalizing their actions, blaming the company for poor oversight or for providing easy opportunities to steal. Many blame management for setting a poor example.

Employees define what is right and wrong regarding their behavior, and they can rationalize stealing from their employer in their own minds. Thieves normally view themselves as average people in a dishonest world where everyone is just trying to get ahead or to maintain what they have. Employees responsible for accounting, bookkeeping and other financial functions should expect to be subject to a different, sometimes higher, level of oversight than their colleagues in other departments. They should welcome the additional scrutiny of your internal financial controls. Employees have to know and see that both doors are being taped with time and date.

Secret shoppers are paid to hang out at malls, restaurants, even hotels. Shopping is their job. Secret shoppers are people who visit businesses posing as customers, evaluate the service they receive, and complete . Secret shoppers are considered independent contractors, and as such, you decide which jobs you want to accept and which to decline. Employee theft victims were less apt than non-victims to trust the police or have faith that the police could help. Businesses that experience employee theft are more apt to experience other types of victimization as well. Employee theft accounted for over 41% of inventory shrinkage, while only 35% was attributed to shoplifting (Mullen 1). Church surveillance by police serves not only to protect public order or, to be more precise, public order includes a ban on church attendance for those who are not legally Christian.

Church surveillance cameras have been gaining popularity recently, especially those that use IP video technology. God is aware that church clergy need to use surveillance cameras. Even in churches, crime rate is still on the increase. God came to their rescue through the edict of King Xerxes, which granted the Jews the right to “destroy, kill and annihilate any armed force” that might attack them (Esther 8:11). Nowhere did Jesus or any New Testament writer state that having surveillance cameras in churches are wrong.

Cheating has become a near epidemic. Cheating feels risky and exciting and watching over your shoulder is part of what all cheaters seem to do. Job interviewing is important, but has its limitations. More and more organizations are taking the next step. Job interviewing is a marketing process, where there is a clear buyer and a clear seller. There have been numerous reports over the years of nursing home abuses, and there have been Congressional investigations into this abuse.

Nursing homes are often understaffed, and sometimes staffed with unqualified or under-qualified caregivers. True but sad there is a lot of abuse in our nursing homes and I for one would never send my parents to one.

In fact Attorney General Eliot Spitzer today announced the arrest of 19 employees at two separate nursing homes in Rochester and Cortland where hidden cameras revealed distressing evidence of patient neglect.

These and other patient neglect cases were the catalyst for a report prepared by the Attorney General’s office that details staffing levels at nursing homes throughout the state.

Hidden camera reporting has exposed systemic racial discrimination, critical weaknesses in airport security, gross incompetence by law enforcement officers and abhorrent patient care in nursing homes and hospitals, however, a recent investigation by Consumer Reports found poor care in nursing homes is still extremely common, especially in the for-profit chains that have become the dominant force in the industry.

The report urges consumers to visit homes, actively monitor the level of care being delivered, and talk to others with family members or friends in the home. “Caregivers in understaffed nursing homes need as many residents as possible to be asleep,” he explains, “because there is not sufficient staff to adequately care for all the residents when they are awake. That’s how bad caregivers need to be watched by the latest hidden camera technology.

Hidden cameras consistently reveal chronic patient neglect and pervasive falsification of care records by nursing home employees. According to officials, hidden cameras revealed that licensed professionals repeatedly failed to provide care or treatment to the resident, and then falsified records to report that proper care had been administered.

For example, nineteen employees at two New York State nursing homes where hidden cameras revealed distressing evidence of patient neglect have been arrested, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer announced.
