Third-generation wireless technology, or 3G, started being rolled out in about 2001, and offers a wide range of services (from music downloads to mobile GPS) and greater efficiency than previous standards.

(3rd Generation) Refers to the current generation of data transmission capabilities over a cellular network that provide Internet access and real-time video via smart cellphones.

Now for a little laymens background on exactly what is the 3G Network and why it is important to communications and so video spy surveillance.

A 3G network will allow you to see and hear video clips, and send and receive multimedia content and information many times faster than is possible over today’s current networks. 3G, as in iPhone 3G, is an abbreviation used for the third generation of cellular phones and networks. AT&T’s 3G-is-nearing-completion announcement is hype leading up to the release of iPhone 2. With more and more 3G networks coming online, the heightened accessibility and functionality of 3G mobiles has become viable even for low end users.

In addition, 3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency.

Customers can use their 3G handsets to quickly access feature-rich wireless content, including videos, games, pictures and the latest music, entertainment, news and weather, through MEdia Net, the company’s mobile Internet portal. With the 3G network, customers also can view razor-sharp clips through CV, an on-demand streaming video service that offers a comprehensive library of mobile video content from some of the top media brands. Customers can now download a game or ringtone, or access e-mail, in a fraction of the time it used to take. Additionally, Cingular customers using a 3G handset can access all the company’s data services whenever they’re connected to the Cingular network.

WebIS plans to bring PocketInformant to the iPhone, which is the leading PIM for Windows Mobile. Web Browsing was the big reason to get the first-generation iPhone, and it’s the big reason to get the iPhone 3G now. Web access is fairly complete, aside from the lack of Flash and Java support. Moreover, navigating through commerce sites with pop-up menus and such isn’t as convenient as we’d like.

Speeds are about the same with GSM 3G being a bit faster. Speeds are expected to range from 130Kbps to 2.4Mbps depending on the technology deployed.

ATT has announced that the new iPhone 3G data plan will cost $30/month, and will include no text messages. ATT charges $5/month for 200 text messages, which means that the iPhone data plan is effectively being increased by $15/month, representing a 75% increase over the existing data plan. ATT was just SO desperate enough that they’re LITERALLY getting raped by Apple (or were) and they were cool with it.

Currently the Web 3G confuses the user. The user thinks of it as if it is mobile Web. Web pages, for example, popped more, as did the touch keyboard layout. The iPhone 3G’s display has a slight yellowish cast to it compared to the iPhone, but Apple says it purposely made the screen “warmer” and more natural by design.

Currently, there are multiple 3G technologies used by different wireless carriers in the U.S. Sprint is also building another high-speed wireless network based on WiMAX, which was recently classified as a 3G technology. Current customers may also choose to wait until they become eligible for an upgrade discount. Eligibility is generally determined by amount of time remaining on a current contract and payment history. Currently the company has a total client base of .

Chances are that T-Mobile’s 3G is coming to your city soon as the 3G network is expanding as we speak. What’s more accurate to say is that AT&T’s buildout of its 3G network is proceeding along nicely and a majority of major metropolitan and mid-sized cities are expected to be covered by the time the iPhone 2.

Before the 3G network is launched, all the work is focused on estimating how the network should look like. The biggest drawback I have with the iPhone 3G is its battery life when 3G network is enabled. T-Mobile has announced that their 3G network is going to further expand to 8 more markets by mid-October while AT&T says its 3G network is nearing completion.

Video Surveillance on the older iPhone phone is actually a “1.1? which came out last year and supports GPS, but still uses the Edge network.  The old iPhone is running the iPhone 2.0 OS (same as the iPhone 3G). The older model iPhone is getting about 2-3 fps (frames per second) with the Edge network.  The iPhone 3G does much better, at least double the speed!

The only difference with the G3 is addition of the faster G3 network instead  of the Edge network. With the new iPhone 3G you will be able to achieve a fairly good framerate with the faster G3 network.

Now the mobile phone can be used as a high-speed modem for connecting to a notebook or palm-held and it’s very easy to get a feeling that you’re there. The fourth nationwide carrier, T-Mobile, says it will roll out its 3G network starting later this year.

Although 3G can be accessed using many cell phones, road warriors who need to get serious work done will likely want to use their laptops.

Now if you are on a 3G Network carrier you will not only be able to hear video clips, and send and receive multimedia content and information many times faster, you’ll be able to watch your house, kids, business at near real time speed.

Shown below is a 3G iPhone monitoring a room in a business using the Apple iPhone 3G.
