Apple ‘s iPhone, the latest incarnation being the iPhone 3G , combines the functionality of an Internet -enabled cell phone with that of an iPod media player . In addition to the usual suite of communication features on a mobile phone, the iPhone can access the Internet via its EDGE or 3G wireless data connection.

Apple claims its 3G speeds trounce the competition, with pageloads 36% faster than the N95 and Treo 750 — and of course it completely trounces the old EDGE data. Battery life isn’t getting put out to pasture though, with 300 hours of standby, 8-10 hours of 2G talk, 5 hours of 3G talk, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio.

Applications can be bought from a desktop iTunes installation and then copied across to your iPhone, or you can choose, buy and download over the air. For iPhone 3G users, this can be done using both Wi-Fi and 3G data connections. Apple doesn’t have the balls to match Nokia.

iPhones competition Google Mobile gives you a single text box to search the web and your contacts on the iPhone. As soon as you start typing, it automatically starts searching Google and gives search suggestions. Google Apps or Zimbra are a purely web based Office suite which let you collaborate in real time on documents. Safari is one of the iPhone’s best applications, it is very nice to use with the ability to turn the phone for landscape browsing as well as zooming in and out when browsing web pages. But if you’re anywhere near your bandwidth limits, using Safari for an extended browsing session on the iPhone is not a good idea. Safari is smart enough to know that most Web addresses use that format—so you can leave all that stuff out, and it will supply them automatically. Instead of http://www.cnn.com , for example, just type cnn and hit Go.

The older iPhone phone is actually a “1.1″ which came out last year and supports GPS, but still uses the Edge network.  The old iPhone is running the iPhone 2.0 OS (same as the iPhone 3G). The older model iPhone is getting about 2-3 fps (frames per second) with the Edge network.  The iPhone 3G does much better, at least double the speed! 

The only difference with the G3 is addition of the faster G3 network instead  of the Edge network. With the new iPhone 3G you will be able to achieve a fairly good framerate with the faster G3 network.
