Children can go missing for several reasons, each of which should be a cause for concern for all of us. Believe it or not parental abduction is a large and growing form of child abduction.

Parental child abduction is a tragedy – and a federal crime – that jeopardizes children and has substantial long-term consequences for the “left-behind” parent, the child, the family, and society. Children who are abducted by their parents are often suddenly isolated from their extended families, friends, and classmates.

Child abduction murders have influenced our laws and formed the rationale for many policies and procedures in social services and law enforcement.

Children are more important than cars, but the Department for Children, Schools and Families—the lead Department—collects no data on runaway and missing children.

Child abduction is a serious and traumatic crime. While everyone has become aware of frightening “stranger kidnappings,” abductions are most often carried out by people who know the child. But even nowadays more and more sex offenders are being let out of jail early to relieve the overcrowding in prisons. These sex offenders will often resort to kidnapping for the child never to be seen again like the Etan Patz case, is worse than the child’s actual death. Child abduction is the equivalent of a nuclear blast to a family. In many ways, having a child abducted and not ever knowing his or her true fate.

Parents often neglect the true feelings of there children. Children need to feel open and able to approach another adult authority figure when somethings not right. Find or help your child find someone they can confide in when they don’t want to talk with you.

Parents can use their internal barometer to help children realize who safe and non-safe people are. A lot of parents worry that their children will become too clingy if they don’t let their children go to a lot of people freely (baby-sitter, family friends, people at a family reunion, etc.)

Depending on the laws of the state and country in which the child abduction occurs, the abduction may or may not constitute a criminal offense. Parental child abduction is a tragedy. When a child is abducted across international borders, the difficulties are compounded for everyone involved.

Parents who have made credible threats to abduct a child or have a history are particularly high risk especially when accompanied by other factors, such as quitting a job, selling a home, and moving assets.

Parent abductors are frequently known to invent stories about the abandoned parent to silence the frightened child’s questioning. With the death of a parent, generally comes loss of attachment, history, and roots.

Parents, schools, faith based communities, law enforcement, community members, and children should all be congratulated for coming together to fight for happy childhoods for all children.

Every child that is taken is one too many, but as we learn more about what works in the prevention/education field and communities support non-profits in getting those messages out there we hope to continue to see a decline.
